Wrinkle Reduction Q & A

What is a keloid?

When you injure your skin, the affected area protects itself by developing a thick, fibrous tissue. Sometimes, the tissue thickens, which results in a smooth, hard growth called a keloid.

Keloids usually appear on your:

  • Chest
  • Shoulders
  • Cheeks
  • Earlobes

Keloids might cause you some discomfort, but they’re not harmful. If anything, you might want them removed for cosmetic reasons.

What are the symptoms of keloid?

Symptoms of keloids include:

  • Lump or ridge on a certain area of the skin
  • Continued growth where you have a scar
  • An itchy patch of skin
  • Some tenderness in the area

Keloids can also cause irritation if they rub against your clothing.

If you’re noticing any abnormalities on your skin, make an appointment with your specialist at The Stella Med Spa at Nurture Women’s Health.

What causes keloid scars?

Keloid scars can come from a skin injury that includes:

  • Burns
  • Acne scars
  • Pierced ears
  • Surgical incision sites
  • Scratches
  • Cuts
  • Wounds
  • Chickenpox scars
  • Vaccination sites

Keloid scars can also form on large parts of your body, depending on the nature of your injury. Once the area starts to thicken, your movement might be restricted.

Studies have shown that keloids have a genetic component, which means you could be prone to keloid scars if any of your family has them.

If you’ve suffered from an injury and notice symptoms of a keloid, book an appointment with The Stella Med Spa at Nurture Women’s Health to get a proper diagnosis and treatment.

How do you treat keloid scars?

The team at The Stella Med Spa at Nurture Women’s Health uses the CynoSure Potenza radiofrequency microneedling treatment to treat keloid scars. This cutting-edge technology is the latest treatment for keloid scars.

Your specialist uses this device to deliver targeted radiofrequency (RF) energy to the affected area to break down the scar tissue. As the RF energy penetrates the skin, your scarring slowly diminishes over time, and you develop smoother looking skin.

The treatment only lasts about 30 minutes, and your specialist can advise you on how many treatments you need, usually between three and seven.

You may experience temporary tingling or redness in the treatment area, but typically the side effects are otherwise minimal. Once your treatment is complete, you can get back to your daily activities, since there is no downtime involved after the procedure.
