Hysterectomy

HYSTERECTOMY Q & A

WHY DO WOMEN HAVE HYSTERECTOMIES?

Woman undergo a hysterectomy for many different reasons. Some women experience painful conditions such as fibroids, abnormal bleeding, uterine prolapse, cancer, endometriosis, adenomyosis, or chronic pelvic pain that lead them to have the surgery to remove their uterus. Normally, with the exception of cancer, a hysterectomy is a last resort solution after all other treatment options have been exhausted.

WHAT IS A ROBOTIC HYSTERECTOMY?

As technology continues to advance, surgical procedures are becoming more and more efficient—hysterectomies are no exception. At Nurture Women’s Health, we offer our patients state of the art treatment solutions, such as a robotic hysterectomy. During this procedure, your surgeon will control the surgical instruments by using a computer that is located in the operating room. The robotic arms can be controlled very precisely and steadily. This is very beneficial, as the surgeon can get into tiny areas and has a much better view of the procedure than with a traditional laparoscopic surgery. This surgery is considered very safe but comes with risks just as any other surgical procedure and often takes longer to complete than other types of procedures.

WHAT IS A LAPAROSCOPIC HYSTERECTOMY?

Many women still opt to have a laparoscopic hysterectomy. This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure which involves the surgeon going through the navel. A tiny camera is inserted into the body, which allows the surgeon to see what they are doing on a larger monitor without having to make a major incision. This type of hysterectomy also leaves minimal scarring.

The medical team at Nurture Women’s Health is equipped with the knowledge and expertise to counsel you about undergoing a hysterectomy, diagnose conditions that would make you a likely candidate, and perform both robotic and laparoscopic hysterectomies. If you have more questions, make an appointment to speak to a doctor at our practice today.
