High Risk Pregnancy

HIGH RISK PREGNANCY Q & A

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS OF HIGH-RISK PREGNANCY?

When certain conditions or complications can impact the mother, the baby or both, a woman is considered high-risk and will be closely monitored by her doctors and certain specialists for the duration of her pregnancy. Often, there is extra monitoring and tests that are performed after the baby is born as well. Together, the health care team that supports a high-risk mom will strive to reach the best possible outcome for both the mother and child.

WHAT CAN CAUSE A HIGH RISK PREGNANCY?

Certain conditions that warrant a high-risk pregnancy include:

  • The age of the woman is a common cause of high-risk pregnancy. If a mother is younger than the age of 17, or older than 35, she is at greater risk to experience complications. The danger of experiencing a miscarriage or facing genetic complications increases significantly after the age of 40.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, kidney or heart problems, a history of miscarriage or other problems with previous pregnancies can also lead to a mother being considered high-risk.
  • Medical conditions that develop during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia or gestational diabetes.
  • Pregnancy related issues, such as problems found with the developing fetus, placenta previa, multiple births, or premature labor.
